Phefumula Country Retreat
Magaliesberg magic
Phefumula Country Retreat, Magaliesberg

When it comes to escaping “the big smoke”, look no further than the luxurious, private and oh-so-pretty Phefumula Country Retreat.
Only 80-odd kilometres outside Johannesburg, this mountain hideaway is a leisurely one hour’s drive, meaning you can aim to skip town before the afternoon traffic and make it in time for a scenic sundowner.
The name Phefumula literally means “breathe” in isiZulu, and couldn’t be a more fitting description for your arrival at your luxury cottage, which is beautifully decorated and complete with an open-plan lounge and dining area, a well-kitted kitchen and an inviting en-suite bedroom. Outside, a large patio invites you to make a braai, take a dip in the jacuzzi and, before turning in to your extra length king size bed, do some much-needed stargazing in comfortable reclining chairs.
What more could you ask for?

Room Tip: We stayed as a couple and would recommend the extra spaciousness and privacy of “Frisky Zebra” cottage, which is the furthest up the mountain and borders the Magaliesberg range.
Good to Know: While the cottages have fully-equipped kitchens, Phefumula’s on-site chef can provide breakfast and dinner at an extra cost (delivered to you) if you don’t feel like getting your hands dirty. Massage treatments are also available in the comfort of your own cottage. You can enquire about these extras on the website.
Cost: Luxury cottages start from R1700 per unit per night and sleep two people. Enquire about midweek specials.
